中央アメリカのカリブ海に面した低湿地の村落を旅した時のことである。
慣れ ない旅においては誰しもが排泄の不調を体験するものだ。
３日ほど便通がなかったが、次の日の朝食を済ますと、便意を催した。
村の人に便所はどこにあるの か？、と聞くと、どこでもいいさ！、という返事。
泊まっていた小屋の裏の人目のつかない草むらに出かけ用を済ました――
長い間溜めていたときほど、それを 成し遂げた気分は爽快である。
